United Airlines says it's over (again), suspends service at JFK
|
United Airlines says it's officially done with JFK and will be suspending all flights to and from the New York airport at the end of October.
This decision comes after United Airlines threatened to suspend service to the airport last month unless the carrier was allowed to increase its number of daily flights. United currently has four flights a day from JFK to LAX and SFO airport.
United leased 40 slots to Delta airlines in a long-term arrangement back in 2015 with no rights to the slots anytime soon. In an attempt to acquire more, the airline tried to negotiate with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to expand their schedule at the airport but found the existing four flights a day did not allow them to remain competitive.
United primarily operates out of its hub at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport, located 15 miles from Manhattan, New York.Â
Service at JFK airport will be suspended on October 30th and affected customers with reservations after the date will be offered a refund or rebooking options.

International tourists are fed up with the US visa process
|
Wait times for tourists requesting travel visas to the US has become such a complicated and lengthy process that it seems to be steering visitors away from the States,
potentially causing major roadblocks for the travel industry's continued recovery.
At the US Travel Association's Future of Travel Mobility conference last month, several panelists criticized wait times of more than 500 days in some markets just to get a visa interview.
Geoff Freeman, CEO of US Travel, said reducing visa wait times is a top priority for US Travel and put it plainly, "The visa wait times right now, to put it frankly, are shameful" continuing to say, “people who want to do nothing other than come here, spend their money and go home with a better impression of the United States, there's absolutely no excuse for making them wait to these extraordinary lengths to do that."
Covid is partially to blame for the long wait times, and many embassies and consulates are still facing staffing challenges that began during the pandemic. Freeman said that US Travel has previously pushed for the use of videoconferencing to conduct visa interviews for faster processing and "heard every excuse in the book" for why it won’t work.
Meanwhile, the US State Department is adamant that the situation is actively improving, with an official sharing that "visa processing is rebounding faster than projected."

Stampede, police response leaves 125 dead, hundreds injured after Indonesian soccer match
|
Fans and families are demanding answers after an Indonesian soccer match left 125 dead and more than 300 injured on Saturday night, creating one of the worst
stadium disasters in history.
At the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java over the weekend, angry Arema Football Club fans led a stampede following their team’s 3-2 loss to rivals Persebaya Surabaya — its first to Persebaya at home in 23 years.
Visibly angry over the defeat, video shows Arema fans running onto the pitch in protest while security officers fired tear gas into the crowd, causing more mayhem and forcing hundreds to funnel through narrow exits. Several survivors claimed that they were beaten by police amid the
chaos.
Fans are calling for the government to launch an independent investigation into the deadly game and probe why tear gas was used on fans inside a stadium, a violation of guidelines set by the sport’s governing body, FIFA. East Java police officials confirmed tear gas was used and admitted they were forced to control “rioting” fans.Â
Since the event, a police chief and nine officers were suspended, while 18 others are being investigated. Indonesia will compensate the families of victims providing them with 50 million rupiahs (roughly $3,254) for each victim.
President Joko Widodo has ordered the football association of Indonesia to suspend all games in the top league until an investigation is complete.

Kim Kardashian to pay $1.3 million fine to SEC
|
Keeping up with the Kardashians seems to be more demanding than keeping up with a 3-step skincare routine.
In the family's most recent scandal, Kim Kardashian touted a crypto asset called EthereumMax on Instagram and was subsequently fined $1.26 million by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Under US law, people who tout stock or crypto security need to publicly
disclose that they are paid to do so, along with the amount, source, and nature of those payments.Â
In an Instagram post Kardashian published in June of 2021, she wrote, “Are you guys into crypto? This is not financial advice but sharing what my friends told me about the ethereum max token!” Kardashian did add a few hashtags, one being “#ad”, which doesn't meet the compliance standards for SEC laws regarding touting investments.
By failing to tell her 225 million Instagram followers that she was paid $250,000 by EthereumMax to publish a post about its EMAX tokens, Kardashian's post broke a security law and can be deemed as a false advertisement to her incredibly large following.
Kardashian agreed to pay the fine of $1.26 million without admitting or denying the SEC's findings and will not be allowed to promote any crypto asset securities for three years. With a net worth of $1.8 billion, this fine likely won’t make much of a dent in her wallet, crypto or otherwise.
